The Gen Z generation, who grew up with smartphones and the internet, has come up with a set of words that feel casual and creative but sometimes confusing to people who are not part of their group.
It is not necessary to be "cool" or "with the times" by understanding Gen Z lingo; however, if there is any value in knowing these expressions as it relates to Gen Z, it will be due primarily to the fact that the internet has made significant changes in our methods of communication. Being a trend writer, I have noticed that Gen Z slang is not a collection of meaningless words, but an entire attitude of jokes, identity, and community moods. Many of the Gen Z words are used by online subcultures and then explode into mainstream, which demonstrates the extent to which the internet influences actual conversation today.
When we learn these Gen Z words, we are not just learning slang; we are understanding a shift in culture and communication styles.
